Several collaborative exercises will be undertaken by the SHWG members to assess the state of the art in computations of viscous flows around a submarine and to accelerate and improve research and development of numerical submarine hydrodynamics. It is not about “is CFD capable to calculate the hydrodynamic effects on submarines?” but which approach should one take to get the accuracy you are aiming for. What is the prospect of CFD calculations in determining hydromechanic properties of submarines? This purpose is inherited from the SHWG objectives to obtain and exchange information on methods used in development of submarine manoeuvring models, implementation of these models in tools, and use of these tools in design, safety evaluation, training and operator guidance and to develop views on direction of- and topics for future research in the area of submarine hydrodynamics, and to explore possibilities for exchange and co-operation on future research. The exercises aim at providing the SHWG an opportunity to address the following issues:

• Validate existing CFD tools and working methods.
• Exchange knowledge and solutions on CFD modelling.
• Generate a guideline for CFD calculations on submarines.
